In 1983, the Flora and Fauna Series was introduced to honor notable figures who played a crucial role in the country's history. Furthermore, it aims to showcase the nation's rich biodiversity, a first in Philippine coinage. All references to the "Bagong Lipunan" were removed, as well as the coat of arms. To reduce production costs, in 1991, the Improved Flora and Fauna series began to be released for some coins, as their sizes were reduced and their shapes changed. Along with physical alterations, the 5-peso coin was reintroduced to reduce printing costs for its banknote. However, the 10, 5, and 1 sentimo coins remain unchanged. All coins from both the original and improved series were demonetized after January 2, 1998, as per BSP Circular No. 81, Series of 1995.
