Improved Flora and Fauna Series
Obverse: Features Emilio Aguinaldo facing right with the BSP mintmark on the bottom left of the bust. Text: "REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS" and “EMILIO AGUINALDO” with the date “1991”.
Reverse: Features a narra tree (Pterocarpus indicus). Text: "PTEROCARPUS INDICUS" with the denomination “5 PISO”.
Description
The coin was a standard circulating coin under the Improved Flora and Fauna Series. It was the first time Emilio Aguinaldo appeared on standard-issue Philippine coinage, not including commemoratives. It was also the first time a five-peso coin had been issued after a 9-year gap since 1982. The obverse features Emilio Aguinaldo, the Philippines' first president and the leader of Filipino forces against the Spaniards. The reverse features a narra tree, often associated with Filipino perseverance and resilience due to its durability. The coin is common due to its high mintage and was demonetized on January 2, 1998, as per BSP Circular No. 81, Series of 1995.
